Last But Not Least

Carrie Grant on baths, booze and Balamory

When was the last time you got really drunk?
I’ve never been drunk, I’m serious. Everyone says to me: ‘you must have been drunk once.’ and I’m like: ‘Not really.’ I remember once making dinner for people and drinking too much wine as I was cooking and feeling very sick and then throwing up. That was about seven years ago - I just don’t drink to get drunk - the idea of being smashed doesn’t appeal.

When was the last time you were approached by a stranger?
It happens all the time. For some reason I just attract crazy members of the public. They don’t actually come up and speak, they don’t even say: ‘hello, I’d like to sing for you, do you mind?’ They just come up, sidle alongside ma on the tube or in the supermarket and start singing. Then as quick as they come up, they just go! I’m a vocal coach - I don’t have a record contract in my back pocket! It’s not I’m suddenly going to go: ‘Wow. I can’t believe it. I’ve never heard a voice like yours. You’re going to be a star. Right here, right now.’

When was the last time you were mistaken for someone else?
I got mistaken for Miss Hoolie from Balamory because my hair goes up at the ends. She’s not someone you’d want to be mistaken for - she’s a children’s character! There was a child screaming; ‘Miss Hoolie, Miss Hoolie!’

When was the last time you acted like a diva?
When I arrived in South Africa a month ago I thought I was going to be staying in a luxury hotel but I was sharing a room in this place that only had showers and I was like: ‘I can’t last a month without a bath!’ I think it was just being away from home. I’m not proud of that. That’s so unlike me, because normally I’m a ‘let’s go and do it’ type of person. But we’re all entitled to a moment every now and then. I think!

When was the last time you maxed out your credit card?
I did go out yesterday to my hairdressers and it was lethal. You go to that hairdressers and they play all that dance music and it puts you in a good mood for spending. I don’t know if anyone else gets like that. You think, ooh I look great and now I want to go and buy a pair of jeans to match my hair!

When was the last time you danced like crazy?
Today with my cousin. Sometimes I just think of a song and I have to find it and play it really loudly and dance. It’s one of my favourite things to do. It doesn’t even have to be with family. If you come over to my house and we talk about a song, I’ll be like: ‘Come on, we have to dance to it now!’

When was your last romantic moment?
When I got home from South Africa. David said; ‘Right, the kids are at school - I want one hour of romance with you.’ I had never been apart from David for more than two weeks. I thought I was going to find being away easy, but you forget how much that other person has an input on your life.

When was the last time you used your celebrity?
I went to Legoland and rang them and said: ‘I’m coming to Legoland, can I get free tickets?’ I hardly ever use it. David and I get invited to a lot of premiers and we say no to most of them but the kids want us to say yes all the time!

When was the last time you felt proud?
I was proud yesterday getting my children’s school reports. I was so proud I cried. My daughter has really struggled at school and her report was absolutely great. Thanks to hard work she is doing really well.

When was the last time you were freaked out?
I was freaked out by David being able to be Mrs Doubtfire and look after the kids while I was away. I’ve come back and it’s all organised. And I’m like, hang on a minute, this house can survive without me. That was a bit of a freakout.
