Merton
College students take a leading role in citizenship
27/02/04
Merton College Sixth Form students have played a leading
part in
organising and hosting a major national conference on citizenship.
`Your Voice, Your View' was organised by the Learning
and Skills
Development Agency and took place at the Royal Festival Hall on 12
February. Over 350 students and teachers from around the country
attended the event.
The College's performing arts students opened the
event with a
performance entitled `What is Citizenship?', working alongside
professional theatre companies Forum and Arc.
A Level student Phillip Tebajjwa was involved on the
planning
committee for the conference, and took an active part hosting and
presenting on the day. The event was attended by David and Carrie
Grant (MOBO-winning musicians and judges on BBC's Fame Academy).
The conference was
organised as part of a national pilot scheme for
active citizenship to be introduced into education. Merton College
has been heavily involved in this scheme, setting up a 'Student
Parliament' and holding its own citizenship forum last year.
